At the Range: A Non-Tactical Guy Goes Tactical, Part 2

After my purchase of a Ruger SR–556E, my next decision was to choose the optic. I wanted something to enhance the BUIS that came standard. You just can’t go wrong with names such as Leupold, Swarovski, Zeiss, Meopta, Nikon, and others. Because I am a hunter at heart—I decided on a varmint reticle in a Redfield revenge series.

At the Range: A Non-Tactical Guy Goes Tactical

I have finally joined the rank-and-file of Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) owners. All I have to say is, boy, do I wish that I had discovered how much fun this was a lot sooner! The sad part is, I was one of those people in my own little world, I was never “against” the ownership of a tactical-style rifle. I just felt that I had no use for one. Since I took the plunge, I have fielded questions from just about every niche of my network of friends, colleagues and acquaintances…

Facts to Remember About Firearms Issues

The National Shooting Sports Foundation is the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry. Organizations such as the NRA, Second Amendment Foundation and National Association of Gun Rights may be better known to the average hunter and shooter, but none are more important to the fight for your Second Amendment rights. The NSSF has been a staunch supporter and has worked tirelessly to protect your rights.

Schumer Wants to Ban 100-Round Clips — I Have to Agree…

I just listened to the feel-good press conference about another so-called Assault Weapon Ban. It was sickening to hear the useless babble from the uneducated, uninformed lawmakers in this country until the logic struck me like a lightening bolt and really opened my eyes. Best Selling AR-15s of 2012

We often field questions about which AR-15 is the best. In my experience, if you ask ten different firearms enthusiasts about the best AR-15, you are likely to get ten different answers. Aside from some fundamental specifications, which at this point most manufacturers meet or exceed, most AR-15s you buy off the shelf work perfectly well for range time. Rather than searching in terms of the best AR, you might consider what the most popular AR is. We ran a report of the top selling AR-15s of 2012 to see which black rifle could be crowned king. Some of the answers might surprise you.

Which Gas System is Best?

It started when people began to compare the AK47 to the AR-15. This is no surprise since both rifles are common on opposite sides of the battlefield throughout the world.

The AK-74 5.45×39 Rifle

The AK-74 shares many similarities with its parent, the AK-47. Not wanting to do away with the incredibly reliable AK platform, the Soviets rechambered the barrel in 5.45, and left the cartridge length the same at 39mm so that the action could stay largely unchanged. Both rifles use the same gas piston system, as well as the same rotating bolt locking mechanism. The bolt system runs on identical rails as the AKM/AK-47, but the bolt itself is slightly smaller to accommodate the smaller cartridge. It is also lighter, making it more efficient and further reducing recoil. The AK-74 also features a larger and stronger extractor than the AKM extractor, which was prone to failure.
